VERSUS holds together what seem to be two contradicting ideas, which constitute a microcosm of contrast: a collision of darkness with radiance, high and low, dissonant with consonant, fugitive with constant and shows, how they interplay in terms of character, style, dramaturgy, and their effect of “sharing” the same space on this CD.

Two Concerti, featured on this CD written by two Russian composers P.I.Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) and S. Prokofiev (1891-1953) almost 50 years apart, demonstrate quite a difference in styles as well as in their writing and language.
After a lifetime of exploration of Western Romantic tradition in his native Russia, Tchaikovsky’s life ends along with the 19th century just as Prokofiev is born, bringing to the world of music a combination of tradition and innovation.
Often called a neoclassical composer, he was a multitalented man and prolific musician. Both composers were praised for their prolific creative work made successful concert tours in Europe and the U.S.

Ms. Portenko's critically acclaimed performance of the Twenty Four Études by Frédéric Chopin at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall was received with a standing ovation and a warm welcome from the New York audience. In the New York Times review of this performance Anthony Tommasini noted: "...her playing was admirably honest and clear-textured. Ms. Portenko pulled off a feat that puts her in a select company."

Encouraged by her audience's enthusiastic response of her astounding array of appearances in concerto and solo recitals, international competitions, and festivals, Irena Portenko has shared her "diligent, tender, and sparkling virtuosity of piano playing" (Ukranian Weekly). She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras under the batons of Rossen Milanov, Kenneth Kiesler, Allin Vlasenko and Volodymyr Sirenko. Her concerto and solo repertoire includes the most demanding works written for piano.

Ms. Portenko's passion and devotion for performing music of contemporary composers have led her to premieres and interpretations of multiple modern works. As an avid chamber collaborator, she has won numerous prizes, appeared in recitals, masterclasses and festivals, and enjoyed collaboration with exciting performers in her native Ukraine, United States and Europe.
Irena Portenko completed Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Post-Graduate work at the National Academy of Music in Kiev, Ukraine.

"In the Études, which, in the first place were intended to become technical exercises, Frédéric Chopin approached his compositional method with enough sophistication to immediately raise its meaning to that of the concert miniature pieces. Each piece seems to open the world of its own character, mood or a scene. For me as a performer, the set of the Études appears as an unique example of individuality within continuity, reminiscent of an invisible thread with the gemstones -each with its own shining personality."
I. Portenko
